Step-by-step

The division, percent, and simplification steps appear here.

How the conversion works

A fraction a/b is the division a ÷ b. That quotient is the decimal. Multiplying the decimal by 100, which is the same as (a × 100) ÷ b, gives the percent. Equivalent fractions keep the same value when the numerator and denominator are multiplied by the same whole number.

5/6 = 0.8(3) = 83.(3)%

  1. Read the fraction. 5/6 means 5 divided by 6. The numerator is 5 and the denominator is 6.
  2. Divide to find the decimal. Decimal = numerator ÷ denominator = 5 ÷ 6 = 0.8(3).
  3. Multiply by 100 to find the percent. Percent = (5 × 100) ÷ 6 = 500 ÷ 6 = 83.(3)%.
  4. Simplify the fraction. The greatest common divisor of 5 and 6 is 1, so 5/6 is already in simplest form.
  5. Build equivalent fractions. Multiply the simplest form by 2, 3, 4, and 5. 5/6 = 10/12 = 15/18 = 20/24 = 25/30.

3/4 = 0.75 = 75%

  1. Read the fraction. 3/4 means 3 divided by 4. The numerator is 3 and the denominator is 4.
  2. Divide to find the decimal. Decimal = numerator ÷ denominator = 3 ÷ 4 = 0.75.
  3. Multiply by 100 to find the percent. Percent = (3 × 100) ÷ 4 = 300 ÷ 4 = 75%.
  4. Simplify the fraction. The greatest common divisor of 3 and 4 is 1, so 3/4 is already in simplest form.
  5. Build equivalent fractions. Multiply the simplest form by 2, 3, 4, and 5. 3/4 = 6/8 = 9/12 = 12/16 = 15/20.

7/8 = 0.875 = 87.5%

  1. Read the fraction. 7/8 means 7 divided by 8. The numerator is 7 and the denominator is 8.
  2. Divide to find the decimal. Decimal = numerator ÷ denominator = 7 ÷ 8 = 0.875.
  3. Multiply by 100 to find the percent. Percent = (7 × 100) ÷ 8 = 700 ÷ 8 = 87.5%.
  4. Simplify the fraction. The greatest common divisor of 7 and 8 is 1, so 7/8 is already in simplest form.
  5. Build equivalent fractions. Multiply the simplest form by 2, 3, 4, and 5. 7/8 = 14/16 = 21/24 = 28/32 = 35/40.
